DPWSTATWhat is it?
The DPWStat system is a combination of management, philosophy, and organizational management tools for public works manager.
The concept was developed from the New York City Police Department's accountability process (Compstat) and has since been implemented by many other police departments, both in the United States and abroad. The system offers a dynamic approach to quality of life improvement, delivery of services, personnel, and resource management, whereby public works leaders identify spikes using comparative statistics and address those spikes with targeted enforcement. To this end, the system includes four generally recognized components: timely and accurate information, rapid deployment of resources, efficient actions, and relentless follow-up. However, the system can be expanded and tweaked depending on specific department needs. Originally, New York City Police Department modeled the system after the broken windows theory, whereby minor crimes would be addressed in order to reduce major crimes. However, over time, its use evolved into a system where productivity was measured and individuals were held accountable for spikes in crime. |
